Paddy Gordon, owner of a mixed practice and farm vet, discusses his observations and experience in vet recruitment and retention. Increasing student numbers are coming through University but equine and farm need to be given sufficient opportunity and encouragement to allow students to select these careers. Paddy will highlight how practitioners can help students with early experience as well as support students most effectively through EMS. Championing success has also been important in developing the Farm Vet of the Future competition. Paddy has 30 years experience in practice and is working with Bristol and Surrey vet schools.

Fleur, EIDS epidemiologist, provides an overview of the 2023 Q4 Equine Quarterly Disease Surveillance Report Focus Article, authored by Jose Vazquez-Boland and his team at the University of Edinburgh. Given how we’ve managed R. equi infections over the years, it's not surprising that we're now confronted with a troubling silent pandemic of multi-resistance. Whether it's handling dangerous drugs or working with unhandled yearlings, as veterinary surgeons we take calculated risks daily. After becoming pregnant with her first child, Emily identified a need for clear and concise guidance for veterinarians navigating pregnancy and parenting in clinical practice. After researching the information for herself, she decided to write a book to help new mothers make evidence based decisions about their work practices. Her book is called "Pregnancy and Postpartum Considerations for the Veterinary Team", and she now offers 'Ultimate Parenting Road Map' workshops in addition to one-to-one mentoring on the subject. Council Member, Angela Jones, joins us to discuss how planning ahead where possible, and having access to the relevant information helps ease the stresses and strains of trying to manage work-life and family-life during those early days in the process.
